Where to Practice Fitness in Seattle

Staying active can be a challenge, especially with a busy schedule or inclement weather. It becomes even more difficult if you’re not sure where to exercise near you. Luckily, Seattle’s exercise scene features all sorts of gyms, studios, parks, and beaches that set the stage for a great workout. Or, if you’re a homebody, you could even workout at home—no need to venture outside to get in a good workout!

4 Places to Exercise in Seattle

There’s no shortage of Seattle fitness spots, whether you prefer an indoor workout complete with AC or an outdoor experience with fresh air and beautiful views.

1. Local Gyms and Fitness Studios

    Local gyms are an excellent place to practice fitness in Seattle. The city is riddled with all sorts of options, each catering to different interests and a wide variety of fitness levels. Whether you love high-intensity interval training or the full-body challenge of bouldering, there are plenty of options to suit your needs.

    For example, the Seattle Bouldering Project is a good option, with its extensive bouldering walls designed for all skill levels. The facility also offers fitness classes, including yoga, making it a good option for a varied fitness approach.

    Or, if you appreciate cycling, Flywheel Sports might be a good option. This facility offers high-intensity indoor cycling classes in an immersive stadium-style setup with advanced technology and motivating instructors.

    Other local gyms and fitness studios have swimming pools, massive weight-training setups, and various classes, including yoga, HIIT, and Zumba. You can find all sorts of options, although availability may vary based on where you live in Seattle. 

    2. Nearby Beaches

      If you prefer exercising outside, enjoying fresh air and a beautiful view, take your fitness routine to the beach. There are an assortment of beaches in West Seattle, some with plenty of space for a great beach workout.

      For example. Alki Beach, with its 2.5-mile paved waterfront path, is perfect for running, biking, rollerblading, volleyball, paddleboarding, and beach workouts. The sandy beach offers a bit of resistance for early morning runs or beach workouts, turning up the heat on whatever workout you do.

      This is just one of multiple beaches in the area. If you live in Western Seattle, pick one closer to you for convenience. Or, for bonus points, walk or run to the beach near you for an extra calorie burn!

      3. Local Parks

      Seattle is home to all sorts of parks that are perfect for getting some fresh air and exercise. Choose a park near your home and walk to it for your workout, or pick your favorite park across the city and pack the equipment you’ll need (if any) in your car.

      For example, Green Lake Park is a popular destination for outdoor fitness in Seattle. Its 2.8-mile path around Green Lake is perfect for walking, running, cycling, or rollerblading. You’ll even get to enjoy some beautiful scenery as you exercise!

      Discovery Park is another great option. It’s Seattle’s largest green space, featuring a whopping 500 acres of natural beauty and diverse landscapes. It has an extensive network of trails that stretch across forests, meadows, and beaches, perfect for hiking, trail running, bird watching, beach workouts, and yoga.

      The Washington Park Arboretum is another great option. Its peaceful, picturesque, and meticulously maintained landscape is ideal for outdoor fitness. The park is a popular spot for walking, jogging, yoga, meditation, and outdoor fitness classes.

      4. At Home

      Home is one of the best places to exercise, especially if you have a busy schedule or don’t appreciate the public setting of gyms, parks, or beaches. While you may not have the fancy equipment you’d find at a commercial gym, the options are endless.

      A set of dumbbells opens a host of weight training opportunities. You don’t even need much space for them—there are adjustable models that pack a whole set of dumbbells into a single pair!Or, if you enjoy cardio, you can do all sorts of bodyweight cardio workouts at home, from high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to low-impact circuits. You could even invest in a few core pieces of exercise equipment, like a treadmill or stationary bike, for convenient at-home exercise.
